About

I untangle music and help students to express themselves beautifully through music in an enjoyable and engaging way.

I teach from my studio near Airlie Beach, in the glorious Whitsundays. I teach face to face and use Skype, Facetime or Zoom for distance teaching.

Please contact me using the contact page, if you would like to explore learning with me.

Great teachers like Dr. Jessica Quinones, Judith Clare, Martin Ronchetti and Colin Bradbury inspired me to want to hand over skills, technique and knowledge to the next generation of musicians. I performed with many bands and orchestras, in hundreds of concerts, including on TV and Radio, playing all sorts of music, to all sorts of people at all sorts of venues.

I have an Honours Music Degree, from University of Huddersfield, and an Advanced Performance Diploma from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with distinction. PGCE. I was awarded an MA in Psychology for Musicians, from Sheffield University in UK. I am Blue carded for Australian teaching.

2019 saw a world premiere of a new Clarinet Concerto written for me by English Composer Stuart Brown in UK. An Australian (Feb 2019) premiere of the Himalaya Concerto took place at Mueller College, Redcliffe, collaborating with the brilliant Renat and Hila Yusupov (Cello with Love). We also premiered some stunningly beautiful music from Uzbekistan.

I adore Contemporary Music and became the first Principal clarinet of Music Theatre Wales, performing small scale contemporary Opera and Music Theatre. “I am not nervousnot with you playing for Music Theatre Wales”. A line from Eight Songs of a Mad King. Many Thanks. Michael McCarthy.

The idea of acting and performing music is not new. An earlier piece written for me by Nick Redfern requires the performer to show the two characters of the personality of Charlie Chaplin……a great piece of music that I’m really busting to play again! I have also premiered Clarinet works by distinguished Welsh composer Mervyn Burtch (Clarinet Concerto), and Christian Alexander( Stella Celi… for Guitar and Clarinet, with Andrew Marlow, Guitar) and Two Picture Pieces Op. 41 (1995), for Clarinet and Piano. 2023 sees collaboration work with Australian Composer Corrina Bonshek. Earlier in the year she composed a work for solo Bass Clarinet, (also for solo Violin and Flute) with the accompaniment of recorded Whalesong, and part of her Immersion Art Installation work for the 2023 Barrier Reef Festival at Airlie Beach.

Pop and jazz is in the mix too ……. add 25 years of being the first call for ‘fixers’ (contractors) playing in theatre pits for musicals.

So….. a mixed bag of great and memorable experiences on which to draw from.

Seeking out new ways of communicating and connecting, in musical, creative and expressive ways have been key factors for me. The area of Disability Arts has been most rewarding and inspirational, where I learned so much about the value of expression, be it in music, art or dance.
