Blog

Welcome to my blog.

I hope to inspire creative minds…… thinking minds, musical minds, and hope to help people along on their musical journey. I enjoy all the people I meet through music and all the countries that I have visited…… either as a tourist, or to perform in. The world is an amazing place…… topsy turvy at the moment, but we have to put our best foot forward and do the best we can. The world of Music and the Arts has undoubtedly hit a difficult time…… it’s not the first time, and people have always wanted good music and art. Maybe its for a solace, to find that ‘safe place’ or just to feel good……. GOOD LIVE MUSIC, GOOD TEACHING, CREATIVITY AND ART….. long may it continue! Please feel free to comment and add to discussions…….in our own sweet way , we might even make the world a better place!!

Here Goes!!!

Who am I and what do I do?

My name is Idris and I’m a long way from home……Pembrokeshire, Wales, but am fortunate enough to live in another gorgeous spot on the planet….. near Airlie Beach, in the Whitsundays. I teach Clarinet Flute and Saxophone and love what I do…… just ask any of my students!

Played in theatre orchestras for over 20 years, played in a ballet orchestra amongst others, and many concerts….of all sorts….pop, jazz classical.

A question I ask advanced students……. What is the difference between motivation and inspiration in term of music? I don’t think there’s a correct neat answer. My take is that we are inspired by the beauty of a sound, by the shaping of a phrase, colour….. what we hear and see. We have to motivate ourselves……. it comes from within…… intrinsic, whilst for me….. inspiration is extrinsic. We motivate ourselves to practise and prepare our lessons and performances…..often because we are inspired. What inspires you? I wonder!!

My job here in country Australia has taught me to be a self- reliant musician. I worked out early on that if I needed something to happen it was up to me to make it work. It’s a hard lesson, and a huge responsibility……. being in the front line of promoting Music and the Arts in the local community.

  1. The time eventually came to move into the new Performing Arts Centre at my Base School, Proserpine High. We’re really stepping out with rehearsals of Queen and Ben Elton’s Musical….. We will Rock You……11 performances in early May. Will be spectacular!

Dare I say I’m livin’ the dream……. It almost feels too much and tempts fate to deliver something we don’t need. Usually I do get a dodgy throat, from singing too much in my lessons……so far so good. .. but the term is only starting. Teaching is underway, and the term is coming together nicely. I have such great people….. young and a bit older to teach.

Anyone else ‘livin the dream’? How lucky are we! Many people are experiencing very tough times, with the dreaded C19 lurking, destroying lives and bringing careers to a desperate and grinding halt. We’re carefully letting 2021 unfold here and being vigilant

Cooked a great vegetarian pie the other night….. Leek and mushroom, in a nice nutmeggy creamy sauce, with a nice short pastry…..an old Cranks recipe……I revisited the book a little while back. Yummo! Nice buttered spuds and a leafy salad. Should have taken a pic!!!

  2. We will rock you…..huge success. Loved by appreciative audiences in packed houses. Huge thank you to a really cool band….especially Matt Grice, playing lead guitar……awesome job by all involved. One week has gone by…been hearing queen songs in my head for most of the week. Getting back into my regular routine of teaching, conducting and playing.

Wooden flute back from a technician in Adelaide. All good

  3. Gday, Been a while since writing on here…..just busyness…… a whole lot of teaching at schools and at home.

Now on school holiday and taking the opportunity to catch up with blog, my instruments and a way ahead!

I talked to a group of people a while back about the importance of words of encouragement, and how a kind word….. just one can impact how we feel, perceive and project ourselves as musicians and human beings.

I’m not really sure how many people see and read my blog…… but Thank you for taking time to check this out and don’t underestimate the impact of what you do to affect other people……. Awesome!!!!!

Some words that affected me deeply……. ‘Be bold’
    ‘Man…. you got soul!!’

I wonder what words affected you??!!
